[People News] Just as U.S. President Trump left Beijing, the Chinese Communist Party and Russia announced on the 16th that Russian President Putin will visit Beijing on the 19th and 20th of this month.
In contrast to the brief message from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kremlin's official statement provided more details: Putin and Xi Jinping will discuss current bilateral matters, further strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and China (the Communist Party of China), and exchange views on significant international and regional issues.
The Russian statement also noted that the two leaders will attend the launch ceremony for the "Russia-China Cultural Education Year (2026-2027)." Following their talks, the leaders will sign a joint statement along with a series of bilateral intergovernmental, interdepartmental, and other cooperation agreements. The statement concluded by mentioning that the visit will also include a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang to discuss the prospects for economic and trade cooperation.
Xi Jinping considers Putin to be an "old friend" and a "good friend," much like Maduro and Khamenei; however, Putin is distinguished as a true friend, with no limits on cooperation, placing him at a higher level than Maduro and Khamenei. Nonetheless, the timing of Putin's visit, occurring within a week after Trump’s departure from Beijing, is notably sensitive.
Political analysts suggest that the agendas publicly announced by China and Russia are merely superficial and intended for display. Putin's timing in visiting Beijing creates an impression of intentionality, as both Russia and the Chinese Communist Party aim to showcase the existence of their friendship. The United States cannot simply act at will regarding China.
Nonetheless, some observers feel that Putin appears eager to clarify with Xi Jinping what benefits have been extended to the United States. Why is there such a lavish welcome for the American president, who has just apprehended his ally Maduro and eliminated the enemy of his friend Khamenei? In essence, Putin, who is also referred to as a good friend by Xi, may find it difficult to comprehend Xi's actions of prioritising profit over friendship and being ungrateful in front of Trump. Today, as you host Maduro's enemy while neglecting your good friend Putin without even a word of support, will you also forget about me when I, your true friend, find myself in trouble tomorrow? Otherwise, how should we interpret Putin's exuberant welcome of Trump, complete with singing and dancing? It is important to note that many of Putin and Xi Jinping's long-time friends in the Middle East and South America are currently facing serious challenges, including the President of Cuba and others.
Concerning the Xi-Trump meeting, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov recently remarked, 'If Beijing and Washington reach an agreement that serves the interests of our Chinese friends, we will certainly be pleased.' However, he quickly added, 'The relationship between us and China... is deeper and more robust than traditional political and military alliances. This new type of relationship has a more pronounced stabilising effect on global politics and the world economy than any other factor.'
Did everyone catch that? Is there an implication from the Russian side that 'we expect a more grand welcome'? This is because our presence is more significant. As a result, although no joint statement or cooperation agreement has been released following the China-U.S. summit, the itinerary disclosed by the Russian side has already clearly included relevant activities. Even before the meeting, the competition for prominence is already quite apparent.
However, the Hong Kong South China Morning Post has reported, citing sources, that Putin's visit is part of the routine diplomatic exchanges between Russia and China, and it is unlikely that there will be a grand military parade or a high-profile welcoming ceremony. Let's wait and see what happens on the 19th.
