[People News] On the afternoon of May 15, President Trump wrapped up his visit to Beijing and returned to Washington. Accompanying him, Emily Goodin, a White House reporter for the New York Post, disclosed that prior to boarding Air Force One, American staff confiscated all items distributed by Chinese Communist officials, including credentials, delegation badges, and the 'disposable phones' issued by the White House, which were then discarded in a trash bin at the bottom of the stairs. 'No items from China (the Communist Party of China) are permitted on the plane,' the reporter noted.
The American side's scepticism regarding the safety of goods from the Communist Party of China is not the only concern; the much-anticipated Trump-Xi meeting was also overshadowed by several physical altercations that occurred outside, underscoring the growing divide between the U.S. and the Communist Party. Goodin's notes further revealed that she witnessed at least three instances of physical confrontations initiated by Chinese staff, with even White House personnel being trampled. This included an incident during Trump's visit to the Temple of Heaven, where Chinese officials denied entry to Secret Service agents accompanying the presidential press corps, citing the agents' firearms and insisting on confiscating it.
The heightened security atmosphere began even before Trump's departure, creating a sense that Beijing was on high alert, akin to a war-like environment.
Beginning in early May, approximately 70 security vehicles and over 10 large C-17 military transport aircraft from the United States arrived in Beijing. Additionally, the U.S. contingent brought along highly encrypted communication stations, electronic warfare equipment, and armoured vehicles known as 'Beasts,' which have defensive capabilities comparable to tanks, as well as several black SUVs equipped with electronic warfare antennas. These devices emit strong electromagnetic interference waves that can render explosive devices triggered by remote control or mobile phones ineffective.
On the evening of May 13, Trump arrived at Beijing International Airport, where he was guarded by American soldiers. The Beijing authorities also mobilised thousands of police personnel, organised into three main systems: police, armed police, and the Central Guard Bureau, along with grassroots stability maintenance staff participating in the security operations. At first glance, the security personnel were armed and serious, vigilantly scanning their surroundings. The street office in Chaoyang District was also activated, with personnel running back and forth, lingering around, anxious that someone might take the opportunity to create trouble, as if an enemy was at the gates.
On the evening of May 13, as Trump's motorcade made its way to the Four Seasons Hotel in Beijing's Chaoyang District, the roads along the route were entirely cleared. A large number of police cars led the way, with motorcycles providing escort on both sides. The black convoy passed through the streets of Beijing one after another, with the end of the convoy only becoming visible after several minutes.
Reports indicate that Trump's visit to Beijing was imbued with a sense of solitary courage, reminiscent of a hero charging into enemy territory, carrying a tragic sense of sacrifice for his country. Before departing the White House, he left a 'succession instruction letter' for Vice President Pence, who remained behind. This letter was placed in the drawer of the 'Resolute Desk' in the Oval Office, prepared in case of an unforeseen event, allowing Pence to assume the presidency if necessary.
According to a report by Fox News, multiple current and former U.S. officials have disclosed that a significant number of accompanying officials, security personnel, and corporate executives were instructed to relinquish their everyday mobile phones and electronic devices in favour of strictly controlled 'clean devices' when entering China. This included a disposable phone that was discarded in a trash can on the 15th.
While Trump praised the talks in Beijing as fantastic and referred to Xi Jinping as a good friend, the underlying reality is highlighted by a significant issue arising from a minor security concern. Trump has never exhibited such tension when visiting any other country; neither he nor any other nation has ever arranged security measures of this nature. From the boycott of Chinese goods and physical confrontations between U.S. and Chinese officials to the use of dedicated disposable phones, these seemingly minor details illustrate the extent of U.S. distrust towards the Chinese Communist Party and a profound lack of security confidence.
Since the start of his first presidential campaign and through to the recent shooting incident at the Hilton hotel, Trump has faced five assassination attempts. Perhaps he secretly believes that venturing directly into the heart of the Communist Party is the true way to safeguard himself, as the smaller-scale assassination attempts in the U.S. are often driven by powerful interests.
Moreover, the Chinese Communist Party appears to welcome Trump’s emphasis on heightened security, as it provides an excuse for Xi’s extraordinarily high security measures when travelling abroad: 'Look, Trump’s security is this stringent when he travels, so it’s not surprising for me, Xi, to take the Zhongnanhai abroad.'
However, it is widely recognised that the primary targets of Trump’s security measures differ from those of Xi Jinping. Commentator Heng notes that Trump’s main focus is on preventing terrorist organisations and personnel, as well as guarding against surveillance, hacking attacks, and data theft from the Chinese Communist Party, while Xi’s primary concern is with crowds protesting against the regime overseas.
