At the 26th anniversary of Falun Gong’s resistance to persecution, on July 17, 2025, Falun Gong practitioners and supporters from the eastern United States gathered on the National Mall near Capitol Hill in National Mall, calling to “dismantle the CCP and stop the persecution of Falun Gong.”(Dai Bing/The Dajiyuan)
94-Year-Old Xu Shujun Faces Imprisonment
Xu Shujun, a 94-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province, is bedridden and in extremely fragile health, yet still faces the risk of being taken into prison.
Xu and his wife Wang Chuanyun were targeted by police on August 18, 2017, after hanging banners in Jidong County that conveyed information about Falun Gong. On September 2, both were arrested and later released on bail pending trial.
In September 2021, the couple were each sentenced to three years in prison and fined 10,000 yuan. Their pensions were suspended, their bank accounts frozen, and 20,000 yuan was seized by the court.
Authorities attempted to send the elderly couple to prison, forcing them into homelessness. State security police tracked their daughter and located their rented residence.
On August 14, 2025, police came to their home claiming they would arrange “medical parole” and needed to take them for a physical exam. On September 16, Wang Chuanyun died under distress and injustice. Just nine days after her death, police again harassed Xu, saying they were processing medical parole for him.
On December 19, a court official escorted Xu to Jixi City Hospital for a “medical evaluation.” After repeated ordeals, the 94-year-old man lost more than 10 pounds, became bedridden, nearly deaf, reliant on adult diapers, and able to eat only small amounts of porridge.
On January 12, 2026, a judge told Xu’s family he did not qualify for serving his sentence outside prison. Doctors allegedly said he could live another five or six years. The hospital refused to sign off on his condition and demanded another evaluation in Harbin, warning that refusal would lead to police handling the matter.
On January 24, the judge again threatened the family, saying even if Xu could not care for himself, as long as he could eat, he could still be sent to prison.
Xu’s health continues to deteriorate under intimidation, while his family lives under enormous psychological pressure, fearing for his life.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual practice rooted in Buddhist traditions, guided by the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. Since its introduction in China in May 1992, it has spread to over 100 countries. In July 1999, the Chinese Communist Party launched a nationwide persecution campaign against the practice, involving arrests, imprisonment, torture, and abuse that has continued for more than 26 years, affecting many elderly practitioners.
Gao Xingtai Persecuted to Death at Age 74
On April 27, 2018, Gao Xingtai (66) from Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, was arrested at home along with fellow practitioners Li Guibin (74) and Shang Xiujun while reading Falun Gong’s main text Zhuan Falun. More than 20 police officers carried out the raid.
After medical exams, Gao and Li were initially refused by detention centers due to high blood pressure and placed under residential surveillance. Shang Xiujun remained detained and died on June 17, 2018, under extreme stress.
In March 2019, Gao and Li were subjected to an illegal in-home trial. Gao was sentenced to seven years and later imprisoned despite poor health. Li was sentenced to four years and fined.
Li Guibin died in prison on April 16, 2023, at age 80. Her body was reportedly emaciated.
On November 3, 2021, Gao was taken under the pretext of a “medical exam” and transferred to Jidong Prison in Tangshan. In June 2025, prison officials informed his family he could no longer eat and was surviving on liquid nutrition. After months of delay, he was finally released home in critical condition — skeletal, unable to speak, unable to recognize people, and completely dependent on care.
He died just 20 days later, on September 6, at age 74.
78-Year-Old Hu Mianfen Reduced to Collecting Trash
Hu Mianfen, a Falun Gong practitioner from Guiyang, Guizhou Province, was forced into homelessness due to persecution. On March 9, 2022, she answered a knock at her rented residence and was taken away by local village officials who claimed they would “take her home.” Instead, she was delivered to a police station and later transferred to Sanjiang Detention Center.
Hu was sentenced to two years and imprisoned at Yang’ai Prison in Guizhou.
After her release in 2024, she returned home to find all her belongings gone. Now 78 years old, she survives by collecting recyclable trash.
These cases highlight the continued suffering of elderly Falun Gong practitioners under long-term persecution, even into their final years of life.△
