[People News] Nepalese rescue teams announced that a Chinese citizen was rescued on Saturday (September 5) from a tunnel in Nepal; a Nepalese woman was also saved in a separate rescue operation. Ten days earlier, a torrent of ice, stones, and mud swept through the Himalayan valley, leading to over 1,300 fatalities, with more than 5,000 individuals still unaccounted for.
As reported by Voice of America, the Nepalese military confirmed that Lu Haitao was rescued from a 225-meter-long tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project.
He is the third individual to be rescued from various tunnels to date. Authorities estimate that since the glacier collapse upstream on August 26, approximately 900 people may have been trapped in these tunnels.
On Friday (September 4), rescuers successfully extracted two individuals from another tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower station located on the same river.
Authorities reported that Lu Haitao showed no visible external injuries and had stable vital signs, although he exhibited mild hypothermia.
Footage released by the Nepalese military depicted him receiving emergency medical treatment inside a helicopter before being transported to a military hospital.
Lu Haitao appeared exhausted and disoriented, with his skin and clothing covered in dry mud and dust.
The official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on this matter as well. According to the report, the Chinese embassy in Nepal confirmed on the 5th that Nepalese rescue workers had successfully rescued a Chinese citizen from a tunnel of a hydropower project that was affected by a landslide on the same day, and their overall health condition is stable.
The report further stated that the rescued Chinese citizen has been transported to a military hospital in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, for treatment. In the hospital, the individual expressed gratitude, saying, 'I am especially thankful to the rescuers... it feels like a miracle to me.'
Xinhua's report did not reveal the name or workplace of the rescued Chinese citizen.
Additionally, the Nepalese military reported that a woman named Chandika Kumari Shrestha was rescued on Saturday from her home in Betrawati. Authorities released photos showing her trapped in a flooded underground structure, covered in mud; rescuers worked in the narrow, sludge-filled space to provide her with drinking water.
On Friday, Nepal's disaster management department reported that floods near the border with Tibet, China, have destroyed homes, streets, and schools, leading to at least 1,344 deaths in Nepal, with around 4,887 individuals still unaccounted for, including 583 foreign citizens, many of whom are pilgrims and trekkers.
Furthermore, according to another report from Xinhua, as of Friday, the death toll in the Tibet region stands at 31, with an additional 531 people (including foreign citizens) reported missing. Among those missing in Tibet, approximately 261 are foreign citizens. △
