[People News] India is set to host the 18th BRICS summit from September 12 to 13. On August 24, several sources disclosed that Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, may lead a delegation of approximately 400 officials.
This visit would be the first large-scale official trip to India by the Chinese leader since the deadly border conflict between China and India in 2020. Recently, the two nations have also faced disputes over a new border issue, resulting in heightened diplomatic tensions. Consequently, there is significant interest in the goals and actions of Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to India, and the signals it may convey.
Last year, Indian Prime Minister Modi made his first visit to China in seven years, but the relationship between the two countries has only seen gradual improvement. In late July this year, various media reported that the Chinese military crossed the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between China and India, entering areas near Pukar La and Ollo in Tak, which led to renewed standoffs, with Chinese personnel erecting 2 to 3 tents in the area in early August.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China on the 24th, the special representatives for the China-India border issue are scheduled to hold their 25th meeting on the 25th to engage in in-depth discussions regarding the border issue. Analysts suggest that this may serve as a preliminary move ahead of Xi Jinping's visit to India.
Two Indian sources have indicated that officials from both countries are expected to leverage the BRICS summit to discuss ways to enhance bilateral engagement and cooperation, while also addressing long-standing border issues and regional security differences. However, the final travel plans for Xi Jinping, as well as whether China and India will hold bilateral talks and the associated agenda, remain uncertain.
An Indian source with direct knowledge of the situation informed Reuters, 'Chinese (Communist Party) officials are currently busy finalizing hotel arrangements and security measures.'
The size of the delegation accompanying Xi Jinping has taken many by surprise. During his last visit to India in 2019, he was accompanied by fewer than 200 officials. In contrast, Xi did not attend the previous BRICS summit, which is scheduled to take place in Brazil in 2025. Analysts suggest that amid a period of economic cooling from Western nations, the Communist Party may be looking to expand trade opportunities through India.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, 'China places great importance on and actively participates in BRICS cooperation, supporting the current chair country, India, in successfully hosting this year's BRICS summit.'
Notably, the American political news outlet Politico reported on August 17, citing four individuals familiar with Xi Jinping's itinerary, that he is scheduled to meet with Trump in Washington on September 24, but has no plans to attend the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly starting on September 22.
According to one informed source, "Xi Jinping is expected to arrive in the United States by September 23 at the latest and will depart on the 25th. He will only hold discussions at the White House for one day on the 24th." The White House recently confirmed in a statement that Xi Jinping will visit on September 24. However, it refrained from commenting on any other potential activities during Xi Jinping's visit to the United States.
