During the conference, Wang Fuzhen, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), announced that the COVID-19 pandemic reached a peak plateau in early to mid-August, with its overall intensity comparable to that of the previous two years. In September, various regions across the country will begin administering flu vaccinations for the current epidemic season.
Wang Fuzhen did not specify which two previous years the COVID-19 intensity in early to mid-August was compared to. According to publicly available information from the Communist Party of China, there were over 3,000 new severe cases and more than 100 deaths reported nationwide throughout 2024, including 359 new severe cases and 18 deaths in August alone.
Many netizens have expressed concerns that the COVID-19 pandemic is expanding in mainland China. The CDC indicated that flu vaccinations will commence in September, prompting some netizens to question whether this might involve mixed COVID-19 vaccinations, reminiscent of community activities by healthcare professionals in white coats.
Data released by the CDC shows that in July this year, mainland China reported 522,000 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, a dramatic increase of 5.6 times compared to June. From August 3 to August 9, among the respiratory samples tested at 216 sentinel hospitals conducting multi-pathogen surveillance for influenza nationwide, COVID-19 was the leading pathogen, with a positive rate of 21.1%. In cases of severe acute respiratory infections requiring hospitalization, COVID-19 also ranked first among the top three pathogens, with a positive rate of 8.6%, reflecting an increase of 0.1 percentage points from the previous week.
Wang Fuzhen also mentioned that since July of this year, the H3N2 subtype of influenza has been spreading across the country, with a recent slight uptick in cases. Each year, influenza epidemics can result in 3 to 5 million severe cases worldwide and between 290,000 and 650,000 deaths related to respiratory diseases, which poses a significant threat to public health.
Observers have pointed out that the Chinese Communist Party has a longstanding practice of concealing the spread of epidemics. Furthermore, with September being the back-to-school season, there are calls for the public to enhance their awareness of self-protection, increase temperature screenings, and improve daily preventive measures.
