[People News] On March 11, the situation in the Middle East has reached a critical juncture. This conflict is not merely a military confrontation between the United States and Iran; it has escalated into a 'naval battle' that threatens the global energy supply. In the last 24 hours, a series of attacks has taken place in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, causing significant turmoil in global financial markets and diplomatic circles. President Trump has assured that he will ensure the 'high security' of oil tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz.
Let’s first examine the latest developments at sea. Iran has evidently escalated its actions, launching indiscriminate attacks in the surrounding waters.
According to reports from the Central News Agency, on March 11 alone, three cargo ships were struck in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf within just a few hours. This includes a bulk carrier that was attacked northwest of Dubai and a cargo ship that caught fire north of Oman, forcing the crew to evacuate. A Thai cargo ship was also affected, and Iranian officials later brazenly admitted, 'It was us!'.
Iran's tactics are particularly aggressive: they are not only deploying missiles but have also begun extensive mine-laying operations. U.S. military intelligence indicates that Iran has laid dozens of naval mines in the shipping lanes in recent days. In response to this threat, President Trump issued an ultimatum, demanding that Tehran remove the mines immediately or face 'unprecedented' military consequences. Immediately following his statement, the U.S. Central Command took action, destroying 16 Iranian naval vessels that were laying mines that same day.
In this tense moment, remarks made by Trump on the social media platform 'Truth Social' have ignited global discussions. He asserted that the U.S. military's bombing of Iran and the protection of the Strait of Hormuz is essentially a 'gift to Xi Jinping.'
This statement may come off as 'high-level black humour.' Why is that? The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has long been the largest purchaser of Iranian oil, which is crucial to Iran's economy. Trump's implication is that since Beijing is so dependent on the oil from this shipping route, the U.S. military's current efforts to eliminate those 'madmen' and mines to ensure the route's safety can be seen as a gift to Beijing.
However, internet users are seeing through this; Trump is essentially reminding Xi Jinping that the lifeline of global oil is controlled by the United States. If the U.S. can safeguard this shipping route, it can also sever it at any moment. Particularly, recent reports have emerged that an Iranian cargo plane, suspected of transporting military supplies from China, was destroyed, further revealing the covert dealings between Beijing and Iran.
The scale of the conflict is expanding, even impacting the Asia-Pacific situation. According to a significant report from the Korean News Agency, due to the urgent need for defensive capabilities in the Iran conflict, the THAAD missile defence system stationed at the Seongju base in North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, is preparing for urgent deployment to the Middle East.
Reports indicate that 48 interceptors have already been unloaded and transported to the Osan base, ready to be dispatched to the battlefield via large transport aircraft.
