(The Center Square) – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has endorsed Gov. Kathy Hochul in her bid for reelection even as the two wrangle over raising taxes on the city's top earners.

In an op-ed published in the Nation on Thursday, Mamdani acknowledged the two Democrats have policy differences, but he said Hochul had shown she was interested in working with him on key issues, such as reducing the cost of living in the state.

“The governor and I do not agree on everything,” Mamdani, a democratic socialist and former Queens assemblyman, wrote in the op-ed. “We have real differences, particularly when it comes to taxation of the wealthiest, at a moment defined by profound income inequality. I continue to believe that the wealthiest among us can afford to pay just a little bit more."

But Mamdani, who is facing resistance from Hochul over his plans to tax the city's wealthiest to fund his lefty agenda, cited his recent work with the governor on expanding universal child care options.

He suggested a new partnership between New York City and Albany following years of "big promises, bitter fights, and little tangible progress."

"We delivered this historic win together," he wrote. "Together, we have fought to protect New Yorkers from ICE. Together, we have defended our party, our democracy, and the ability of working New Yorkers to raise a family in the city they love. And together, we have forged a new era in the relationship between Albany and City Hall after too many years defined by pettiness instead of productivity."

His endorsement of Hochul is expected to be the final nail on the coffin for Democratic Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado, who is running a longshot campaign to unseat Hochul in the June 23 primary. Delgado and his running mate – India Walton, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America along with Mamdani – had been hoping for the mayor's endorsement amid the rift with Hochul over his tax plans.

“I’m grateful for his partnership in finally bringing universal child care to New York," Hochul said in a statement. “And I know that he’ll stand strong alongside me as we fight against Donald Trump’s attacks on this state.”

The endorsement comes a day after Hochul announced her pick for running mate as a candidate for lieutenant governor, former City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams.

Hochul was also endorsed Thursday by fellow Democrat and New York Attorney General Letita James, who praised the all-female Democratic ticket and said under their leadership the state "is safer and costs are coming down for working people."

"I'm excited to work with them to defend New York from our reckless federal government as we protect critical funding and New Yorkers' rights every single day," James said.

The winner of the Democratic primary will face Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, the only Republican in the race. He has not yet named his running mate for lieutenant governor.

The New York Republican Party criticized Mamdani's endorsement, saying it shows that despite Hochul's reputation as moderate she is embracing the Democratic party's radical left wing.

"Kathy Hochul spent months seeking the endorsement of an antisemitic Communist who stands against everything America stands for," NYGOP spokesman David Laska said in a statement. "Now she has it, and the radical left's takeover of New York Democrats is complete. What new taxes and radical proposals did Kathy Hochul promise Zohran Mamdani in exchange for his support?"
