[People News] According to a report by Radio Free Asia’s Uyghur service, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) announced this Wednesday that the Swedish government has recently detained a man suspected of engaging in espionage for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), specifically monitoring the Uyghur community in Sweden — Dilshat Reshit. Since 2004, Reshit had served as the spokesperson for the organization. Following the incident, the WUC immediately removed him from his position.
According to Reuters, Swedish prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist issued a statement on Wednesday saying the man is “suspected of illegally gathering information and intelligence related to the Uyghur community for the Chinese intelligence services.” Radio Free Asia has so far been unable to reach Reshit or his legal representatives for comment. When asked by Reuters, the Chinese Embassy in Sweden claimed to be “unaware” of the situation and declined further comment.
The World Uyghur Congress is a leading global organization advocating for the rights of the Uyghur people, who are among the Muslim ethnic minorities in China facing severe repression. The organization’s statement did not specify how Beijing infiltrated its ranks but reiterated that it has long warned of the CCP's global espionage network. The statement said the organization has launched “internal counter-espionage measures,” but due to a lack of institutional and financial resources, it hopes to strengthen cooperation with governments around the world to jointly guard against CCP espionage activities abroad.
The CCP is known for its extreme sensitivity to international criticism over its repression of Uyghurs and consistently denies related allegations. However, numerous research institutions have documented substantial evidence of abuse. The U.S. government has accused the CCP of committing genocide. In 2022, the United Nations released a report stating that the Chinese government’s “arbitrary and discriminatory detention” of Uyghurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang may constitute crimes against humanity.
