[People News] Multiple Hong Kong media outlets have reported that Leung Chai-yan, the second daughter of former Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, was found unconscious and collapsed inside a serviced apartment at No. 1 Aldrich Street, Shau Kei Wan, at 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday (April 8). Paramedics arrived at the scene and confirmed that she had passed away. After the investigation, police stated that there were no suspicious circumstances, and the cause of death will be determined following an autopsy. According to a report by Oriental Daily, at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday (April 9), Leung Chun-ying arrived at the apartment accompanied by a member of the VIP Protection Unit. At around 5 a.m. the same day, Leung confirmed his daughter’s death in a post on his Facebook page. Leung Chai-yan was born on September 11, 1991, and was 33 years old.
According to Radio Free Asia, Leung Chai-yan previously attended German Swiss International School and later transferred to the UK’s all-girls Wycombe Abbey School, graduating in 2010. She then enrolled at the London School of Economics (LSE) to study law, but withdrew from her studies in June 2013.
Past Incidents: Slapping Her Mother and Media Attention
Leung once aspired to become a model and enter the entertainment industry. Her behavior drew media attention on several occasions. In 2015, she got into an argument with her mother, Regina Tong, in Lan Kwai Fong and reportedly slapped her, causing a public uproar.
She had also made several Facebook posts accusing her mother of abuse and revealed that she had suicidal thoughts, which sparked widespread public concern. Leung admitted to self-harming by cutting her wrists but denied that it was due to pressure from her father’s political status. She stated that her mother should be held responsible for her emotional struggles.
Leung Chun-ying Previously Admitted His Daughter Had Health Issues
Some media interviews with psychiatric specialists speculated that she might have suffered from depression and anxiety. Leung Chun-ying had publicly stated that his daughter had health issues, including emotional instability, but denied that his wife had ever hit or imprisoned their daughter.
In recent years, Leung Chai-yan lived a more low-profile life, occasionally sharing moments from her daily life on social media. Her Instagram account had 177,000 followers, and her last visible post was published on March 6. In that post, she mentioned feeling "really sick" and said she would return to social media after a few days, apologizing to her followers.
As of now, the cause of Leung Chai-yan’s death remains unknown, pending autopsy results.
