Li Xiaopeng Officially Removed from Office, Princeling Faction Almost Marginalized

The Five Pillars of Control Under Xi's CCP Rule (Meiqing / People News)

[November 9, 2024] On November 8 (Friday), CCP leader Xi Jinping signed a presidential order officially removing Li Xiaopeng, the son of former Premier Li Peng, from his position as Minister of Transport. With Li Xiaopeng's move to a secondary position, the influence of the princeling faction within the CCP has been largely marginalized.

According to a report by CCTV, on November 8, Xi Jinping signed multiple presidential orders, including Order No. 40, which stated that the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress decided to remove Li Xiaopeng from his position as Minister of Transport and appoint Liu Wei as the new Minister of Transport.

Public information indicates that Liu Wei is from Zhecheng, Henan Province, and has held various positions in Henan over an extended period. He was promoted to Vice Governor of Henan Province in 2018, served as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Emergency Management in 2020, became Deputy Secretary of the Jilin Provincial Party Committee in April 2022, and Deputy Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee in December 2022.

In September of this year, the CCP Central Organization Department announced Liu Wei's appointment as Party Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, relieving Li Xiaopeng of his position as Party Secretary.

Li Xiaopeng, the eldest son of former Premier Li Peng, worked in the power industry for many years and held roles such as General Manager and Party Secretary of China Huaneng Group. After 2008, he served as Vice Governor and then Governor of Shanxi Province. In 2016, Li Xiaopeng was appointed Minister of Transport. Despite his entry into politics, his achievements were considered average, but he attracted significant attention due to being the son of former Premier Li Peng.

According to information from the CPPCC, Li Xiaopeng has been reassigned to the position of Deputy Director of the Economic Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). With Li Xiaopeng moving to a secondary position, only a few members of the "second red generation" remain in high-level CCP positions, the most senior being Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Since Xi Jinping abolished term limits through constitutional amendments in 2018, consolidating his power, many of his trusted associates have been officials he worked with during his time in Fujian and Zhejiang. He has been cautious with other members of the princeling faction, including Liu Yuan (son of Liu Shaoqi), General Liu Yazhou (son-in-law of Li Xiannian), Wang Qishan (son-in-law of Yao Yilin), Deng Pufang (son of Deng Xiaoping), Chen Yuan (son of Chen Yun), and Wang Jun (son of Wang Zhen), all of whom retired early or were marginalized.
