On September 21, Eastern Time, the office of First Lady Melania Trump released details regarding Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan's visit to the White House. This includes Trump personally greeting them at Andrews Joint Base, a welcome ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, a military review in the Rose Garden, a summit, a state dinner, a visit to the National Asian Art Museum, as well as tea tasting and a visit to the National Archives of the United States.
Notably, the press release used the term 'Your Excellency' eight times to refer to this visit, reflecting a notably warm tone.
At first glance, it appears that Trump is giving Xi Jinping significant respect, as it is quite rare for him to personally greet a visitor. To date, the only other leader Trump has welcomed in this manner is Russian President Vladimir Putin, and both of these globally recognized dictators have been humorously labeled by Trump as 'good friends.' It is clear that Trump has a keen understanding of the psychology of dictators.
However, while he is extending this courtesy, Trump never forgets to assert his stance and will not relinquish his established positions on various issues. This exemplifies a classic carrot and stick strategy. In my opinion, the results of the Trump-Xi meeting will likely be limited. Xi, having gained face and wishing to avoid provoking Trump, will probably make some concessions on trade, AI, and issues concerning Russia and Iran. However, considering the Chinese Communist Party's historical record, the likelihood of them fully honoring their commitments remains low.
In this context, Trump is aware of the situation, but due to many unresolved domestic issues and the upcoming midterm elections, he needs to maintain relations with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which prevents him from completely severing ties. The meeting between the two parties serves merely to indicate that their relationship can still be sustained.
There are two noteworthy points regarding the itinerary released by the First Lady's office. Firstly, at the conclusion of the military parade in the White House Rose Garden, military aircraft will fly over the White House, including a B-2 'Spirit' bomber and four F-22 'Raptor' fighter jets. This means that Xi will witness the might of the most powerful American bomber flying overhead.
The B-2 bomber is one of the ultimate symbols of American military strength, capable of carrying up to 40,000 pounds (approximately 18,144 kilograms) of nuclear or conventional weapons, and can strike targets across half the globe. In June 2025, the B-2 executed the 'Midnight Hammer' operation against Iran's nuclear facilities, which sent shockwaves around the world. At that time, seven bombers flew for 36 hours, dropping over a dozen massive bunker busters, each weighing 30,000 pounds. Prior to this, the B-2 Spirit bomber was deployed for the first time at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam to counter potential provocations from the CCP.
The F-22 'Raptor' fighter jet is the world's first mass-produced fifth-generation stealth fighter and is among the most advanced fighter jets in existence today. Its primary role is to ensure air superiority in the theater, with additional missions that include ground attack, electronic warfare, and signal intelligence.
Trump showcased America's 'absolute strategic trump card' to Xi Jinping and officials of the Chinese Communist Party, serving as a silent psychological deterrent. This was a clear message to Xi not to provoke the U.S. on issues such as Taiwan. The U.S. remains the dominant power in the world, fully capable of overpowering the CCP and, if necessary, using military force to influence the terms of negotiations.
Many will likely remember the moment last year when Trump welcomed Putin at the airport. On August 15, 2025, as Trump and Putin walked down the red carpet, the sound of B-2 stealth bombers accompanied by F-35 and F-22 fighters roared overhead. Cameras captured Putin looking up in admiration, while Trump smiled and applauded. This was undoubtedly a reminder to Putin: do not forget America's military capabilities!
A similar scene is anticipated to take place in the White House Rose Garden; one wonders how Xi Jinping will react at that time. Will Chinese state media report on the display of American military strength?
Another interesting aspect is that the Trump couple took Xi and Peng to visit the National Archives of the United States, which houses and displays the original documents of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
The Declaration of Independence opens with the assertion: 'All men are created equal, and they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. To secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. Additionally, the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights guarantees freedoms of speech, press, peaceful assembly, and the right to petition the government.
However, for officials like Xi Jinping and other party leaders, even if they recognize that 'the just powers of government are derived from the consent of the governed, and that the people have the right to change or abolish a government that undermines their rights,' and are aware of the people's freedoms of speech, assembly, and belief, they will never cede power to the populace in order to preserve their own authority. This is especially true during times of political crisis, when they tend to escalate repression.
In essence, Trump's close examination of the foundational documents that transformed America alongside Xi and Peng is ultimately futile. Nevertheless, the B-2 Spirit bomber remains a significant deterrent for Xi and the Communist Party, who adhere to the belief that 'might makes right.'
