Trump’s State of the Union Speech Mocks PLA Technology, “Sourness” Off the Charts

Although Trump did not directly focus on China policy throughout the speech, he referenced a U.S. military strike in Venezuela earlier this January. In describing the operation, he specifically mentioned the heavily fortified military compound where Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro resided—a site guarded by thousands of troops.

Trump noted that the facility was protected by “Russian and Chinese military technology.” But what was the result? U.S. forces, he said, still suppressed all enemy defenses. Observers interpreted this as a public jab at both CCP and Russian military technology, implying that it was unreliable and unable to withstand American deterrence power.

Drawing a “Red Line” on Iran

Beyond the mockery of PLA technology, another major foreign policy focus of the speech was Iran.

Trump drew what he described as an unbreakable “red line”: Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons.

He warned that Iranian missiles could soon reach U.S. territory, posing a global threat. While Trump expressed a preference for resolving tensions through diplomacy, signals from the White House suggested that, if necessary, he was prepared to use lethal force.
