Investigation Reveals Dark Side of Wuhan Organ Harvesting

On December 19, 2025, the International Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong published a report titled "The Dark Secrets Behind the Lie of 'Citizen Donations'—The Black Market Organ Harvesting Industry in Wuhan". (Dajiyuan)

[People News] This publication debunks the Chinese Communist Party's claims regarding 'citizen organ donations'. It sheds light on the hidden aspects of the organ transplant industry chain and donor sources in Wuhan, while also exposing the heinous practice of harvesting organs from Falun Gong practitioners.

The International Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (full name: International Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong) has conducted extensive telephone investigations over the years at several hospitals in the Wuhan area, including Tongji Hospital, Wuhan Union Hospital, Hubei Provincial People's Hospital, Central South Hospital of Wuhan University, and the General Hospital of the Central Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army. The recordings from these investigations indicate that the organ transplant volume at major centres in Wuhan is substantial, with short waiting times, and that organs from Falun Gong practitioners are being utilised.

Tongji Hospital in Wuhan has consistently been a leader in organ transplantation in China, ranking first in kidney transplants, fifth in liver transplants, and third in heart transplants.

Wuhan has emerged as a national centre for heart transplants. As of January 30, 2022, Union Hospital has performed over 900 heart transplant surgeries, maintaining its position as the top facility in the country for several consecutive years; it has also conducted over 100 pediatric heart transplants.

The investigation uncovered highly unusual occurrences. For instance, on the same day, the Union Hospital affiliated with Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan successfully performed three pediatric heart transplant surgeries, and the Wuhan Union Hospital managed to find four heart donors within just 13 days. This suggests a surplus of organ donors, short waiting times, and a nationwide allocation system.

In recorded phone interviews, both Wuhan Tongji Hospital and Wuhan Army General Hospital acknowledged their use of organs from Falun Gong practitioners. The General Hospital of the Central Theatre Command of the People's Liberation Army is one of the largest kidney transplant centres in Wuhan. The director of kidney transplantation admitted to utilising organs from Falun Gong practitioners. Additionally, this hospital has exchanged donors with the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hubei University of Medicine.

In recent years, the Chinese Communist Party's persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in Wuhan has escalated, with an increase in forced blood draws and a rising number of practitioners going missing after abductions. In 2018, Chen Yixin, the Minister of the Ministry of State Security, designated Wuhan as a key site for the nationwide campaign against Falun Gong and promoted the Wuhan model of persecution throughout the country. These actions have created conditions that facilitate the removal of organs from Falun Gong practitioners by hospitals.

The phone investigations conducted by 'The World Organisation to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong' also revealed that there are virtually no organ donations in the Wuhan area. Hospitals have reached out to ordinary citizens, even deceiving and stealing organs from some individuals, fabricating 'brain death' to illegally extract patients' organs.

To maximise profits, hospitals are harming patients, exacerbating their conditions, leading to admissions in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which drives up costs, and subsequently deceiving families into abandoning treatment and consenting to organ donations.

Reports from various media outlets suggest that several students who were declared 'brain dead' were actually hospitalised for minor issues like fractures and falls, which eventually led to organ donations. The organ donation model in China has transformed into a unique industry chain characterised by organ trafficking.

Zhang Yu, a nurse at a leading hospital in Wuhan, revealed that the removal of patients' organs has become an open secret in Chinese hospitals. This practice does not involve isolated actions by individual doctors; rather, it constitutes a 'complete high-level industrial chain' that includes the hospital director, department heads, lead surgeons, and various operational staff.

The investigative report also highlights the alarming fact that hundreds of university students in Wuhan have mysteriously disappeared in recent years. While the missing individuals are known by name, law enforcement has taken no action. The report further explores the potential links between these disappearances and the local extensive organ transplant industry.

Moreover, 'International Investigation' has uncovered that hospitals are reaping enormous profits from live organ harvesting. In Hubei Province, the fee standards for organ procurement are set at 70,000 yuan for each heart and lung, 260,000 yuan for a liver, and 200,000 yuan for a kidney. The kidney transplant volume at Wuhan Tongji Hospital alone reaches thousands each year, generating profits in the hundreds of millions.

This investigative report reveals that China's organ transplant industry has seen explosive growth since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999. To obscure the truth about live organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners, the Chinese Communist Party initially claimed that organ donors were sourced from death row inmates, later asserting that they were 'citizen donations.' In reality, organ donation has devolved into a form of trafficking, which not only fails to meet the vast demand of China's organ transplant market but also necessitates a large pool of living organ donors who can be killed on demand. Falun Gong practitioners represent a significant source, and this issue has extended to the general populace.
