Greenland
[People News] From the very beginning of his term, U.S. President Trump has continuously emphasized that he wants to obtain Greenland. Since January 2026, especially over the past ten days, Trump has made four consecutive statements—taking Greenland.
Trump said he would take action regarding Greenland, whether they are willing or not; he also said that if this is not done, Russia or China will control Greenland. When asked whether this move might affect relations with NATO allies, Trump responded: If it affects NATO, then let it affect NATO.
I don’t know whether everyone has noticed a detail: this time Trump did not first say, “Let’s talk about it.” He directly said that Greenland must be taken. Why is that?
Why is the Trump administration determined to take Greenland despite opposition from NATO allies?
First, we must clarify one thing: how important Greenland’s strategic position is to the United States.
Do you know that if Russia launches missiles toward North America, what is the shortest route? It is not around the Pacific Ocean, nor around the Atlantic Ocean, but directly flying over Greenland. Whoever installs radar in Greenland can gain a few extra minutes, and whether or not you have those few minutes determines whether entire North American cities exist or not. The difference is that great. Therefore, Greenland is not an ordinary island; it is a button, the very first button for early warning of Russian nuclear missile launches!
Second, Denmark’s relationship with the Chinese Communist Party makes Trump extremely uneasy.
On the surface, Denmark has always said it supports democracy, supports NATO, and respects the United States. But Denmark as early as 2008 signed a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement with the CCP.
Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has publicly stated that the comprehensive strategic partnership formed between Denmark and the CCP constitutes the framework for bilateral cooperation and is the starting point for cooperation between the two governments. Since then, intergovernmental cooperation between the two countries has continued to develop. Based on the comprehensive strategic partnership, Denmark and the CCP launched the 2023–2026 Green Joint Work Program in 2023, with both sides agreeing to strengthen cooperation in green energy, shipping, scientific research, and Arctic-related projects.
This is neither ordinary exchange nor cultural visits; it is strategic cooperation, and it is strategic cooperation that includes scientific research plus the Arctic plus shipping. According to U.S. logic, it is not a problem for Denmark to do business with the CCP, but you cannot allow the CCP to approach America’s missile defense line and threaten U.S. national security. And Denmark’s strategic cooperation with the CCP, especially strategic cooperation that includes scientific research, the Arctic, and shipping, in the eyes of the United States is equivalent to letting the CCP conduct forward reconnaissance, handing America’s vital point over to the enemy, and directly threatening U.S. security.
Therefore, the United States does not suddenly want Greenland this time; rather, Denmark’s cooperative relationship with the CCP has crossed America’s red line. As current affairs commentator “North America Wang Lü” analyzed, within America’s national security logic, there are three things that cannot be touched: first, nuclear deterrence cannot be touched; second, homeland security cannot be touched; third, strategic early warning cannot be touched. And Greenland covers all three. This is probably the fundamental reason why the United States is determined to take Greenland. Trump overturning the table to take Greenland is not willfulness; it is issuing a warning. A warning to whom? A warning to all those who want to let the CCP approach America’s vital point, and a warning to all allies who think they can still play both sides and stand with one foot on two boats.
At present, the U.S. plan to acquire Greenland has already begun. Not only does Secretary of State Rubio plan to hold talks with Denmark next week regarding Greenland, but Republican U.S. Representative Randy Fine formally submitted a bill on January 12, proposing to authorize the president to take action to obtain Greenland and list it as the 51st state of the United States. The White House also reiterated today that, based on national security, U.S. ownership of Greenland has become “an urgent priority.”
From this, it appears that with America’s strength and Trump’s style of action, acquiring Greenland is probably not a question of whether it is possible or not, but a question of when it will be acquired and in what manner.
