[People News] The Chinese Buddhist Association published a statement today (August 19) that harshly criticises former Shaolin Temple abbot Shi Yongxin, accusing him of serious violations of Buddhist precepts and hindering the healthy transmission of Buddhism, stating that he has 'tarnished the reputation of the entire Buddhist community in the country.' In response, netizens criticised the Chinese Buddhist Association, saying, 'Reports about Shi Yongxin have existed for ten years; where have you been all this time? It's all the same corruption.'
The article from the Chinese Buddhist Association claims that Shi Yongxin misappropriated and occupied project funds and temple assets, allegedly committing criminal offences. It states that he has severely violated Buddhist precepts, created chaos in the management of Shaolin Temple, and disrupted the normal order within the Buddhist community, thus obstructing the healthy transmission of Buddhism and tarnishing the reputation of the entire Buddhist community in the country.
The article further emphasises that obeying the law is an obligation for every citizen, and being a monk does not change one's fundamental identity as a citizen. No one possesses privileges that allow them to transcend the law; there is no space outside the law, no teachings outside the law, and no individuals outside the law.
It specifically points out that in the new era (referring to the governance era of General Secretary Xi Jinping), Buddhists must adhere to the Constitution and laws, safeguard national interests and public order, which is a concrete way of repaying the country's kindness.
The Chinese Buddhist Association's article, with its severe language, seems to indicate its own position. In reaction, netizens expressed their outrage and scorn.
Oh, did you just realise this today? Have you only discovered it after all these years? How shameless of the Buddhist Association; when the wall falls, everyone pushes it down!
Reports were made ten years ago, and now that the scandal has erupted, everyone is suddenly expressing their opinions. Where were they a decade ago?
It's quite amusing. Everyone is generally corrupt; let's not even mention others, haha.
If nothing was discovered, nothing was exposed, nothing went awry, and there were no issues, then that person is considered a good person, a capable individual, a craftsman. But when trouble arises, they are reduced to nothing, not even worthy of being called trash.
Is it Shi Yongxin (释永信) who has tarnished Buddhism, or did the Buddhist Association itself lose its credibility? In light of ongoing reports and doubts, you chose to ignore them, and now you come forward with righteous indignation? Your karmic debts remain unresolved.
Years ago, someone made a real-name report, and Shi Yongxin managed to evade accountability. Shouldn't there be an explanation for that?
Are there really no individuals above the law? What happened to the real-name report from ten years ago? Are you willing to discuss it?
After all this talk, I simply want to know how the investigation concluded that there was nothing wrong back then.
Because back then, the support was still strong enough.
It's all the same corruption and greed. Shouldn't we also examine those who protected him over a decade ago? When the old crow lands on the pig's rear, no one should blame anyone else.
This isn't just a personal issue; the fact that such a person could persist for so long makes this organisation the most disgraceful. The Buddhist Association should also conduct an investigation; there isn't a single clean member among them.
The tarnishing happened ten years ago. Why didn't your Buddhist Association speak out then? Now you're shifting the blame to Shi Yongxin; you are even more contemptible than he is!
Is it only Shi Yongxin who has brought shame to Buddhism? There are many monks across the country indulging in wine and women, using offering money to pursue women. I've even heard of nuns keeping men; I suggest disbanding the Buddhist Association altogether.
Whether someone has committed a crime should be determined by a court ruling; the Buddhist Association seems to be getting a bit anxious!
The Buddhist Association should also investigate; there isn't a single clean member among them!
Shi Yongxin, the former abbot of the Shaolin Temple, was reported to have been taken away for investigation on July 24. The Shaolin Temple Management Office confirmed on the evening of July 27 that Abbot Shi Yongxin is currently under a joint investigation by multiple official departments for alleged misappropriation of project funds and temple assets, violations of Buddhist precepts, and maintaining improper relationships with several women, as well as having illegitimate children. The Chinese Buddhist Association also announced on July 28 that it had agreed to revoke Shi Yongxin's monk credentials. On July 30, the Chinese Buddhist Association updated its official website, removing the name and related information of former Shaolin Temple abbot Shi Yongxin (secular name Liu Yingcheng) from the article titled 'Leadership Structure.'
Shi Yongxin was elected and re-elected as vice president of the Chinese Buddhist Association in September 2002 until his investigation, and he served as a national representative for four consecutive terms.
Political commentator Qin Peng remarked earlier in his program 'Qin Peng Observation' that Shi Yongxin's rise to prominence was due to his alignment with the government's economic needs, his connections with political figures such as Zhao Puchu and Li Changchun, and his adherence to the political ideologies of former party leader Jiang Zemin and current party leader Xi Jinping. These complex interconnections of politics, religion, and business reveal that he is not a genuine disciple of Buddhism, but rather a 'red religious model' skilled in manipulating power and influencing public sentiment.
