(Dajiyuan) - On January 25 (local time), the CIA released a statement supporting the theory that the COVID-19 pandemic (referred to as the CCP virus) originated from an accidental leak at a laboratory in Wuhan, China. For years, the CIA had maintained that it could not determine whether the pandemic resulted from a lab incident or natural origins.
On January 31, when asked about the CIA’s latest report during a press conference, White House Press Secretary Levitt stated that this truth had been delayed for several years. She also mentioned that years ago, when President Trump made similar claims, the media mocked him as a “conspiracy theorist,” but now it has been proven that Trump was right.
The White House’s statements are based on rigorous investigations conducted by several departments. This implies that the U.S. government will hold the CCP accountable. Indeed, with millions of American deaths and countless infections caused by the CCP virus, how could the U.S. government remain indifferent? Faced with evidence, no amount of denial or blame-shifting by the CCP will be effective.
In fact, as early as 2020, during his first term, Trump consistently expressed his intent to hold the CCP accountable. On September 7 of that year, Trump stated at a press conference, “We will hold China (the CCP) responsible for allowing the virus to spread globally.” On September 9, Trump first mentioned that “China (the CCP) released something they shouldn’t have,” which originated in Wuhan, spread worldwide, and caused a great disaster for the United States.
On September 22, during a video address at the 75th United Nations General Assembly, Trump highlighted the CCP virus issue at the outset. He stated that the U.S. had “waged a fierce battle against the invisible enemy, the China (CCP) virus,” and emphasized, “In our pursuit of this bright future, we must hold accountable the nation that unleashed this plague upon the world—China (CCP).” He also asserted, “The United Nations must hold China (CCP) accountable for its actions,” listing irrefutable evidence of the CCP’s responsibility.
It’s particularly noteworthy that on August 23, 2020, the night before the Republican National Convention, Trump’s re-election campaign released his second-term policy agenda. Among its ten themes was the eradication of the CCP virus. Trump explicitly stated that in his second term, he would “hold China (CCP) fully accountable for the spread of the virus worldwide.” Given Trump’s character and his high rate of fulfilling promises, his commitment to holding the CCP accountable is not mere rhetoric.
Moreover, Trump’s push to hold the CCP accountable is backed by strong public opinion. In a 2021 online poll conducted by then-Vice President Harris, 90% of Republicans and 67% of Democrats from a nationally representative sample of 1,993 American adults believed the CCP government should be held responsible for the virus’s spread.
The question that arises is: What measures will Trump take to hold the CCP accountable? The foremost step would be demanding compensation.
On December 17, 2021, in an interview with Fox News, Trump stated that China (the CCP) had destroyed the entire world and should pay $60 trillion in compensation for the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier in August, at a rally in Wisconsin, Trump had declared, “China (the CCP) and the CCP virus—they must pay reparations. We have suffered so much in terms of deaths and lives lost.” He added, “Even if they pay $10 trillion, it wouldn’t be enough.”
At the end of December last year, the state of Missouri began court proceedings for a $25 billion lawsuit against the CCP for the pandemic caused by COVID-19. This was the first case by a U.S. state seeking accountability from Beijing for the global pandemic.
According to the International Monetary Fund, the U.S. GDP in 2021 was approximately $22.94 trillion, while China’s was $16.86 trillion. Demanding compensation close to four times China’s GDP would be unbearable for the CCP. The Trump administration likely recognizes this, but they also have options such as raising tariffs and freezing CCP assets in the U.S.
Of course, before taking action, the U.S. government will ensure thorough legislative preparation. With the Republican Party controlling both houses of Congress, the COVID-19 Victims Compensation Act is likely to pass. This bill would strip China of its sovereign immunity and allow private lawsuits against the CCP for acts such as concealing vital information about the CCP virus and silencing whistleblowers.
The bill would also enable courts to freeze CCP government assets so victims could receive compensation. Furthermore, the legislation suggests establishing a dedicated COVID-19 Victims Compensation Task Force within the State Department to investigate Beijing’s mishandling of the pandemic internationally, including its use of the World Health Organization to cover up its lies. If the CCP regime resists international compensation demands, the U.S. would lead a coalition to pressure Beijing into paying reparations, including through contingency plans designed to force compliance.
Additionally, Congress might pass the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, requiring the CCP authorities to repay $1.6 trillion in special bonds.
Undoubtedly, Beijing is grappling with how to respond to Trump’s pressure regarding the Panama Canal and trade, as well as the looming accountability for the CCP’s role in spreading the virus. Given the CCP’s notorious tactics, it’s possible they will continue to employ underhanded methods to destabilize American society and divert public attention. However, no matter how much they scheme, it will ultimately be futile and may only hasten their downfall.
