[People News] The Chinese actor Wang Xing, who was lured to Thailand under false pretenses, has now safely returned to Shanghai.
It must be said that Wang Xing is fortunate. Many other Chinese citizens who share his ordeal remain trapped in scam compounds, living lives worse than death.
According to a United Nations report, there are hundreds of thousands of scam workers in Southeast Asia, with Myanmar and Cambodia alone accounting for over 220,000 individuals. Observers believe the vast majority of these people are Chinese nationals or ethnic Chinese, most of whom were kidnapped or coerced into such activities.
A report from Thai police further revealed that approximately 70,000 Chinese nationals or ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia are trafficked annually to Myanmar through various human trafficking channels. After his rescue, Wang Xing disclosed that the building where he was detained held 50 other Chinese individuals.
Whether it's 220,000 or 70,000, these figures are equivalent to the population losses of a large-scale war. Clearly, Chinese citizens have become the primary victims of non-war-related acts of terror.
As one netizen commented, "If so many Americans were trafficked or scammed, the U.S. government would have already launched a thunderous rescue operation." Indeed, the U.S. government has always regarded the protection of its citizens' lives and safety as its paramount responsibility. If the Chinese government were truly committed to safeguarding its people, it would have immediately taken decisive actions to rescue the countless individuals like Wang Xing still trapped in scam compounds.
But what has it done? Virtually nothing.
Following Wang Xing's safe return, the Chinese internet quickly flooded with desperate pleas from the families of other victims, urging for rescue efforts. Some family members even created an online document called the "Star Homecoming Plan," dedicated to collecting information about Chinese nationals who have fallen victim to human trafficking. As of the early hours of January 11, this document had already compiled a list of over 1,100 individuals trapped in Myanmar's scam compounds. In the document's help request section, some family members wrote that they had reported their loved ones' cases to the police, but the police refused to open investigations.
What is even more infuriating is that on the same day Wang Xing returned to China, the "Star Homecoming Plan" document was censored and became inaccessible.
Previously, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had proudly declared, "At any time, China (the CCP) will never abandon its compatriots. The motherland will always be their strong support."
Yet now, of the 50 Chinese nationals detained in the same building as Wang Xing, only Wang Xing has been rescued. The other 49 remain trapped, alongside tens of thousands of others in similar situations. Why hasn’t the CCP taken timely action to rescue them? Is this what the CCP means when it claims it will "never abandon its compatriots" and will always be their "strong support"?
