October 20, 2024 - On the evening of October 18, 2024 (Friday), students from Zoucheng No. 1 High School in Jining City, Shandong Province, launched a large-scale protest to oppose the school's decision to cancel their weekend break.
Videos circulating online show a large number of students gathered in the school's corridors, chanting “Give us our break!” in unison, demanding that the school restore their weekend holiday. In one video, a student can be seen lying on the ground in front of the office of the academic dean, expressing their protest. Some netizens reported that over a thousand students participated.
According to the students, the protest stemmed from the school’s decision to hold a sports event on Sunday, which effectively canceled the weekend holiday, reducing their usual one-and-a-half-day break to only six hours. This sudden change sparked widespread dissatisfaction among the second-year students, who initiated the protest during their Friday evening study session, resisting what they considered an unreasonable decision by the school.
The students expressed that they already face immense academic pressure, and the weekend is a rare opportunity for them to relax and recharge. The school’s sudden cancellation of the break severely impacted their ability to rest and left them feeling disrespected by the administration.
Zoucheng No. 1 High School is a public senior high school located in Zoucheng City, Jining, Shandong Province.
As of now, related posts on Weibo have been censored.
Footage of the protest made its way overseas, sparking discussion among netizens: “They’re finally thinking for themselves,” and “This is how they condition people to become ‘chives,’ starting from high school—996 and 007 mode.”
Earlier this year, on September 5, a similar student protest took place at Guangxi Nanning Technical Institute when the school prohibited the use of mobile phones, prompting students to demand refunds.
According to several students, security personnel and instructors from the institute attempted to forcibly confiscate phones from students in one of the dormitories, but this led to collective resistance. During the confrontation, some instructors reportedly used violence against a student who refused to hand over their phone, triggering outrage among the students. They rushed out of their dorms, shouting “Refund! Refund!” in protest of the school’s unreasonable policy. The protest spread to other dormitories, and the school eventually abandoned its plan to confiscate phones.
In late 2022, large-scale historic protests erupted across China in opposition to the government’s strict "zero-COVID" measures, with significant student participation, causing panic among the authorities.
