[People news] Just hours after a phone call between Trump and Putin on July 4, Russia launched its largest drone and missile assault on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Russian drones and debris from those intercepted by Ukrainian air defence systems struck the consular section of the Polish embassy in Kyiv and the Chinese consulate in the southern city of Odesa. On July 2, during a meeting with the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi firmly asserted that Beijing was not providing military assistance to Russia.

According to a report by Deutsche Welle, Ukrainian authorities indicated that investigators discovered Chinese-made components within the drone wreckage. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba noted that these Chinese parts facilitated the attack on the Chinese (CCP) consulate in Odesa. 'There is no more apt metaphor to illustrate that while Putin escalates the war and terror, he also entangles other countries in it.'

On the night of July 19 to 20, 2023, the Chinese consulate in Odesa was bombed for the first time by Russian forces.

At that time, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson notably refrained from condemning the attack, stating only, 'The shockwave damaged parts of the walls and windows of the consulate. The consulate staff had already evacuated, and there were no casualties. China is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to communicate with relevant parties, taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel in Ukraine.'

On July 2, Wang Yi met with Charles Michel in Brussels during the "13th China-EU High-Level Strategic Dialogue." When asked whether the Chinese Communist Party was providing financial or military support to Russia, Wang Yi promptly denied it, stating, "If Beijing were to do so, the conflict would have ended long ago."

During the discussions that day, Wang Yi unexpectedly revealed a significant truth, saying, "Beijing does not want to see Russia suffer defeat in the Ukraine war, as it fears that the United States would then shift all its attention to China." This statement left the EU officials present quite astonished.

Just two days later, Russia's offensive in Ukraine contradicted Wang Yi's claims. In fact, there has been substantial evidence for some time indicating that Beijing has supplied a considerable amount of dual-use military and civilian materials to Russia.

On May 26, Oleh Ivashchenko, the Director of the Ukrainian Foreign Intelligence Service, stated in an interview with the Ukrainian National News Agency (Ukrinform) that Ukrainian intelligence had identified at least five instances of cooperation between Russia and China in the aviation sector from 2024 to 2025, which included the supply of equipment, spare parts, and documentation. Additionally, there were six cases of "large-scale shipments" of specialized chemicals, although the Ukrainian government did not provide further details.

Ivashchenko further noted, "By early 2025, 80% of the critical electronic components for Russian drones will come from China."

In response, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not provide any comments. △
