[People News] On Monday (21st), He Jingshu reposted an article targeting Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping on the Singapore commentary platform 'Critical Spectator' via her personal Facebook. The article asserts that Xi Jinping has 'always behaved like a gang leader' throughout his 12 years in office, and now, in the midst of a tariff war, he is absurdly launching a 'charm offensive' in Southeast Asia.
According to Radio Free Asia, the article titled 'If Xi Jinping had not behaved like a gang leader over the past 12 years, China would have greater global influence today' was authored by Polish commentator Michael Petraeus. It contends that the 'Emperor himself' (Xi Jinping) is now seeking cooperation from neighboring countries that he has 'ruthlessly plundered' for over a decade, revealing the dire state of the Communist Party of China's situation; he also calls for a boycott against confrontation and trade protectionism, yet it is he who has violated international law by imposing the 'nine-dash line' in the South China Sea on ASEAN countries, claiming that most of the South China Sea belongs to China, while constructing military facilities on disputed islands and reefs and sending coast guard ships to harass vessels from other nations.
The article asserts that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) presents itself as a 'shining beacon of free trade,' but in reality, it restricts foreign companies from entering its domestic market, thereby breaching several commitments made upon joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) related to state subsidies, intellectual property rights, market openness, and the cessation of forced technology transfers. Now, when confronted with similar practices, the CCP claims that 'protectionism is bad.'
Xi Jinping is compared to the CCP's version of Don Corleone, the mafia boss from the 'Godfather' series, who is known for making 'offers that cannot be refused.' He now expects the victims of his policies to see him as a friend and partner. In the ASEAN region alone, the CCP has leveraged the controversial 'Belt and Road' investments, created so-called debt traps, and attempted to offload excess production capacity to other countries at low prices, resulting in an influx of cheap goods that threaten to collapse local industries.
Challenging the Notion of Being an Acceptable 'Trump Alternative'
Currently, Xi Jinping is calling for a partnership with Europe, but the article contends that the CCP's treatment of Europe is no less abusive than that of the United States. Additionally, Beijing's support for Moscow during the Ukraine war is characterised as 'essentially a war against the West.' The dissatisfaction of the international community with U.S. President Trump does not imply that Xi Jinping can be viewed as an acceptable alternative. Furthermore, Trump has indicated a willingness to reach agreements with all nations, and once these agreements are in place, the U.S. is likely to be trusted to uphold them, while the CCP is infamous for its unfair treatment of partners.
The article emphasises that all actions have consequences, and more than a decade of abuse cannot go unnoticed, as if nothing has occurred. The Chinese Communist Party (Zhongguo Gongchandang) had decades to demonstrate its genuine commitment to international multilateralism. 'If it truly supported it, it would have reaped the rewards by now.' Nevertheless, despite China's assertions of prioritising strategic and long-term development, its approach to international relations remains short-sighted and focused on immediate benefits. Thus, if Xi Jinping expects the international community to take sides in the Sino-American rivalry in favour of the Chinese Communist Party, it may be nothing more than wishful thinking.
