WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump clashed with the governor of Maine on Friday over federal funds the president threatened to withhold from the state over transgender athletes participating in girls and women's sports.
"We will see you in court," Governor Janet Mills, a Democrat, said as she stood up and confronted Trump during a White House event.
Trump signed an executive order earlier this month attempting to exclude transgender girls and women from female sports, a directive that supporters say will restore fairness but critics say infringe on the rights of a tiny minority of athletes.
He threatened to withhold federal money from Maine if it did not comply with his order.
The order threatens to cut off federal funding for any school that allows transgender women or girls to compete in female-designated sporting competitions.
