People News - In recent years, telecom scams have been spreading across several East and Southeast Asian countries. Recently, a Malaysian human rights organization stated that 99% of the scam groups are led by Chinese nationals.
According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, the Malaysian Humanitarian Organization (MHO) and dozens of victims’ family members held a protest in front of the Thai embassy on Wednesday (February 12), calling on Thailand to rescue Malaysian victims of these scams. The Thai embassy accepted their petition letter.
Hisham Muddin, the head of the Malaysian Humanitarian Organization, said that Thailand has become a transit country for human trafficking. Victims are sold from Thailand to Myanmar, Laos, and other countries, with at least 70 telecom scam compounds located in southern Myanmar.
A Chinese-Malaysian representative of the organization stated that their information indicates that more than 99% of the scam groups are led by Chinese nationals. These individuals target both Chinese citizens and foreigners, with only Chinese nationals having the capability to organize and continue these scams on such a scale.
The organization also noted that, while they have successfully rescued hundreds of victims, most Malaysian victims remain trapped in scam centers, especially in Myanmar and the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Laos.
Radio Free Asia previously reported that China and Thailand are conducting joint operations to combat the rampant telecom scams in Southeast Asia. However, some observers believe that these actions are merely superficial due to the complex web of interests involved in the scam networks.
