[People News] On September 3, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un met in Beijing and held close talks. On September 8, a video of the two having a private conversation inside Putin’s official car was made public.

According to the Chosun Ilbo, Pavel Zarubin, a journalist with Russia’s state-owned broadcaster VGTRK, posted on his Telegram account on September 8 that he had obtained and released exclusive footage of Putin and Kim’s undisclosed dialogue.

In the video, Putin and Kim are seen sitting shoulder-to-shoulder in the back seat of Putin’s Aurus limousine, chatting closely. Although background music covered up their words, the two leaned toward each other, gestured as they spoke, and appeared to be thoroughly enjoying the conversation.

The pair drove to the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, where they first held an expanded meeting lasting about 1 hour and 30 minutes, followed by a one-on-one discussion. Video footage showed the two accompanied only by one interpreter each, conversing over tea.

During the summit talks, Putin expressed gratitude for North Korea’s support in the Kursk operation, stating: “We will never forget.” Kim replied that helping Russia was “a brotherly duty.”

Following their first summit in Vladivostok in April 2019, the two leaders met again in September 2023 at Russia’s Vostochny Cosmodrome, in June 2024 in Pyongyang, and this year in Beijing — underscoring the closeness of their relationship through annual summits.

North Korean media also emphasised Kim’s interactions with Putin in its documentary on this Beijing visit, highlighting scenes of the two clasping hands tightly and laughing heartily.

Korean Central Television stressed their bond, declaring: “Comrade Kim Jong-un and the President of the Russian Federation, Comrade Putin, had a pleasant meeting, pouring out their hearts to each other. During this moment of great significance, they exchanged constructive views on many issues of mutual concern, deepening mutual understanding, trust, and friendship. Both sides expressed satisfaction.”

Before the summit, however, friction broke out between the delegations.

North Korea’s staff attempted to raise the indoor temperature to 23°C, while the Russian side insisted on keeping it at 20°C. The two delegations quarrelled in front of the thermostat, even pulling at it. In the end, the North Koreans backed down first, while the Russians held their ground and adjusted the setting.

Additionally, Kremlin reporter Alexander Yun posted on Telegram a video showing that after the over two-hour meeting, two North Korean staff members carefully cleaned Kim’s seat. They wiped the backrest and armrests, cleaned the coffee table next to him, and collected his water glass.

Reuters quoted analysts as saying this was a security measure to prevent foreign espionage.
