On January 6, 2025, at the plenary session of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, Xi Jinping stated: "The stockpile of corruption has not yet been eradicated, and new cases continue to emerge..." indirectly admitting the failure of the anti-corruption campaign. People News - Chinese citizens deeply resent the corruption within the CCP and the greed of its officials. However, fearing retaliation from the regime, many have long remained silent. Now, as more people see through the true nature of the CCP and its power significantly declines, public confidence and courage have grown. Citizens are becoming increasingly outspoken about their true thoughts. Recently, Gong Wenmi, former Deputy Secretary-General of the Hunan Provincial Political Consultative Conference, was investigated and ousted for corruption. The local public cheered at the news, calling it "immensely satisfying." Some businesses and shops even set off fireworks and displayed banners in celebration. Many people remarked: "We've waited for this day for a long time!"
Public records show that Gong Wenmi, now 63, spent most of his career in Hunan. He previously held various positions, including Standing Committee Member and Head of the Organization Department of Zhangjiajie, Deputy Secretary-General of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee, Deputy Secretary and Mayor of Shaoyang, and later, Party Secretary of Shaoyang.
Between 2016 and 2021, during his tenure as Shaoyang's Party Secretary, Gong developed a poor reputation among locals, who accused him of being "riddled with vice" and focused solely on amassing wealth. Ironically, in 2017, he delivered a nearly 15,000-word speech at the Shaoyang Municipal Discipline Inspection Commission meeting, grandstanding about anti-corruption efforts.
According to local accounts, Gong Wenmi epitomized the corrupt and greedy CCP official—loudly proclaiming anti-corruption slogans from the stage while engaging in bribery and other corrupt activities behind the scenes. Thus, when news of his downfall broke, locals celebrated enthusiastically.

On January 24, Weibo original video blogger "Hao Guozhong Zatan" posted that after the former Party Secretary of Shaoyang, Gong Wenmi, was placed under investigation, some local businesses and shops hung banners and set off fireworks in celebration. Many people said, "We've waited for this day for a long time!" Comments on the post included: "Repressed for too long," "Everyone's been waiting for this," "The public resentment is too strong," and "This is the will of the people; the trend is unstoppable."
Meanwhile, Weibo influencer "Xiao Heiye Zhijing" recalled a major scandal in Shaoyang's political scene from over three years ago. When Gong Wenmi was about to step down as Party Secretary, an official gave him a large bribe in hopes of securing a promotion. However, as Gong’s departure neared, there was still no sign of the promotion. The official, realizing that his money had gone to waste, stormed into Gong's office, demanding an explanation. Instead of addressing the issue, Gong Wenmi scolded him harshly. In a fit of rage, the official slapped Gong across the face. This incident quickly spread throughout Shaoyang’s political circles.
Online articles further revealed that Gong Wenmi’s "unconventional" approach to selecting leadership was a frequent topic of gossip among Shaoyang's political and business elites.
For example, a former Deputy Secretary of a district Party committee, identified as Ms. R, originally worked as a nurse. Due to her good looks, she caught Gong Wenmi’s attention. With Gong Wenmi and Liu Gang, the Executive Deputy Director of the Municipal Organization Department, pulling the strings, she rapidly climbed the ranks and was appointed Deputy Secretary of a district (county) Party committee—a key leadership role.
Another female Deputy Secretary, Ms. G, who was promoted alongside R, also faced public criticism. She started her career in the Communist Youth League and had only worked in a county-level city for a little over two years. Without even serving as a member of the county Party Standing Committee, she was directly promoted to Deputy Secretary of the County Party Committee and Minister of the United Front Work Department.
Corruption is a systemic disease within the CCP bureaucracy. In less than a month since the start of 2025, Hunan province alone has seen seven provincial and department-level officials fall under investigation. They include: Deng Lijia, Deputy Director of the Population, Resources, and Environment Committee of the Hunan Provincial Political Consultative Conference; Qin Lijun, former Party Member of the Shaoyang Municipal People's Congress Standing Committee; Li Yanyun, former Party Secretary of the Yueyang Federation of Trade Unions, who voluntarily surrendered; Liu Jie, Party Secretary of Lianyuan City; Hou Xiaoping, Second-Level Inspector of the Huaihua Municipal Education Bureau; Wang Yonghong, Standing Committee Member and Executive Vice Mayor of Shaoyang; Shen Zhidin, Vice Mayor of Shaoyang.
On January 6, during the CCP’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection plenary session, Xi Jinping stated: "The current anti-corruption situation remains severe and complex. The stockpile of corruption has not yet been eradicated, and new cases continue to emerge..." These remarks essentially confirm that after twelve years of anti-corruption efforts, the campaign has failed. While some officials are removed, new corrupt figures continue to emerge. Perhaps Xi Jinping himself has come to realize that corruption in the CCP is an inevitable consequence of its dictatorship and authoritarian system. As long as the CCP exists, corruption cannot be eliminated, and the people's hope for a stable and prosperous life will remain out of reach.
By openly celebrating the downfall of corrupt officials with banners and fireworks, the people of Hunan are sending a message to Xi Jinping: Any attempt to preserve the rotten CCP regime goes against both the will of the people and the mandate of heaven. If Xi insists on doing so, he will not only become a scapegoat but will also be ultimately abandoned.
