(The Center Square) – President-elect Donald Trump took aim at special counsel Jack Smith once again after the prosecutor resigned days before Trump is set to re-take the nation's highest office.
Smith spent at least $35 million on two separate prosecutions of Trump. A federal judge tossed Smith's classified documents case against Trump in July 2024 because the judge ruled Smith's appointment was unconstitutional because the U.S. Senate did not confirm him.
Before Judge Aileen Cannon tossed the case, Trump had pleaded not guilty to 40 felony counts that alleged he kept sensitive military documents, shared them with people who didn't have security clearances, and tried to thwart the government's attempts to get them back.
"The Stench of Deranged Jack Smith and his thugs is GONE," Trump posted on Truth Social. "They were sent packing after spending over $100,000,000, destroying the lives of many people and families, who will never be the same again. Deranged Jack accomplished nothing, except to show what complete losers my political opponents are!!!"
Trump said Smith left his position with nothing to show for the time and taxpayer money he spent.
"Deranged Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ. He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "After spending over $100,000,000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty handed!"
Smith's two prosecutions of Trump cost at least $35 million, according to federal reports Smith previously filed. Those reports run from November 2022 to March 2024, but don't cover the entire period Smith's team worked on the Trump cases.
"[Smith] was illegitimately involved in this political persecution, and all of the hundreds of millions of dollars spent by our hapless government were, simply put, wasted!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. "He has already filled thousands of rejected statements and documents against me, which were a 'joke,' and the public just voted for me, in a landslide, to be their President!"
Smith completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on Jan. 7, and "separated from the Department" on Jan. 10, according to a footnote in a federal court filing.
Federal prosecutors previously moved to end two criminal cases against Trump – the election interference case in Washington D.C. and the classified documents case in Florida. After Trump won the 2024 presidential election, prosecutors dropped the election interference case against Trump because of the Department of Justice’s policy against prosecuting sitting presidents.
