(The Center Square) — U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La. has secured re-election to Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District, continuing his role representing the western part of the state, which stretches from Shreveport to Opelousas.

Johnson secured more than 80% of the vote.

Johnson, who recently rose to national prominence after being elected Speaker of the House in October 2023, was challenged only by Joshua Morott, a substitute teacher from Slagle.

Early voting brought Johnson over 70% of the vote, according to data from the Louisiana secretary of state's office.

Johnson’s campaign highlighted his legislative record, his experience as a constitutional attorney, and his recent role as House Speaker, a position he assumed following Kevin McCarthy's removal.

Morott ran on a platform focused on dismantling the U.S. Department of Education, repealing Obamacare, and limiting government spending. Unlike Johnson, who has held the seat since 2017 and ran unopposed in 2022, Morott did not report any campaign fundraising or spending.

Johnson first was elected to the US Congress in 2017, following a term in the Louisiana House of Representatives. In 2022, he secured reelection without opposition.

In an interview with Semafor, Johnson said the GOP is preparing Republicans for an ambitious, wide-reaching legislative package if they win control of the government.

Johnson described his vision for "a policy and agenda-driven administration and Congress," saying he believes Donald Trump "can be the most consequential president of the modern era" if a well-orchestrated legislative plan is pursued.

"We don’t want to make the mistake that we made in the past," Johnson told Semafor. "Back in the 2017 timeframe and in previous years, we Republicans kind of took a single-subject approach to reconciliation. We did one round of health care reform, one round of tax reform. But we’re looking at [fiscal year 2025], we want to have a much larger scope, multiple issues to address in addition to the expiration of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act."
