[October 21, 2024] Another animal abuse incident has occurred in a Chinese university. Multiple netizens reported that on October 17, a student from the College of Light Industry at North China University of Science and Technology publicly abused and stomped a cat to death before throwing it into a trash bin. This incident has drawn significant attention online.

A video released by the "Companion Animal Special Fund" shows a male student tying a cat’s neck with a rope, lifting it next to a trash bin, then brutally stomping and beating it until the cat died, after which he threw its body into the trash bin. Many netizens stated that they had filed complaints with the university and the local government hotline.

According to informed sources, the student involved is Yan Moufei, a student of the class of 2022. He frequently watched videos of cat abuse during class, and after class, he would abuse and kill cats when he encountered them. Despite being aware of his behavior, the university did nothing to address it. After the video of Yan publicly abusing the cat was exposed, the school threatened other students to delete the exposed content or face expulsion, and Yan also intimidated other students.

The incident quickly attracted online attention.

A pet blogger and prominent Weibo user, "Actually, I’m Not That Ugly, Meow," uploaded screenshots on Weibo and said, "In the past few days, I’ve received numerous pleas for help from students at the school. I have compiled all the evidence, images, and videos. I urge the school not to silence or punish the students who spoke out, but to respond directly and severely punish this cat abuser. The cat killer deserves appropriate punishment!"

Another netizen, "You Don’t Have to Love, But Don’t Harm," revealed: "This is not the first time Yan has abused a cat to death. This orange cat was very close to a white cat. He killed the white cat first, then killed this orange one. Yan is ruthless, and he even threatened classmates who tried to stop him. His arrogance is intolerable. Yan should be expelled and fined! We strongly oppose any protection or cover-up."

Video blogger and Weibo user "A Maojiang" stated: "A student from the College of Light Industry at North China University of Science and Technology abused a cat on campus. The school is silencing the students and not allowing them to speak up. When will an anti-animal abuse law be implemented?"

Under public pressure, on the morning of October 21, staff from the administrative office of the College of Light Industry at North China University of Science and Technology told Jimu News that the school is currently handling the matter and that specific details would be released on the university’s official website.

Staff from the Tangshan City Government Service Hotline stated that the case had been handed over to the school’s supervisory department, which had accepted it but had not yet provided details of the handling.

A staff member from the Hebei Provincial Department of Education said they had recorded the relevant information and would assign it to the appropriate department for further action.

North China University of Science and Technology’s College of Light Industry is located in Tangshan, Hebei Province. Established in 2001, it is an independent college approved by the Hebei Provincial Government and confirmed by the Ministry of Education, operated by North China University of Science and Technology.
